Soil & Water Conservation: The Indian River County Soil and Water Conservation District was organized for the purpose of developing a program of management and conservation of the soil, water and related natural resources of the County to promote and encourage the voluntary implementation of conservation practices. The District is governed by a board of five (5) supervisors chosen through a general election to serve for four year terms. Supervisors are non-salaried public officials. The BCC provides office space, some equipment and supplies for an administrative assistant and a conservation technician. The District works in cooperation with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service. |

The purpose of the Ag Extension is to assist residents in solving problems relating to Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences, Marine Resources, Natural Resources and Youth Development. FL Yards & Neighborhoods: The purpose of the Florida Yards and Neighborhood program is to assist property owners in reducing the amount of storm water run-off that enters the Indian River Lagoon. Waste products are created as a result of landscape management activities. Through public programs, mass media and demonstration projects, the adopting of environmental landscape management practices can improve the water quality of the Indian River Lagoon. This grant funded program conducted by the County Extension Service programs is cooperatively funded by Indian River County, the University of Florida, St. John's River Water Management District, Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the United Stated Department of Environmental Protection. |

S.W.D.D. - Recycling: The County's solid waste system is an organized dependent special district known as Indian River Solid Waste Disposal District (S.W.D.D.). The Recycling Department was establilshed under S.W.D.D. as part of the County's recycling/recovery plan, the adoption of which was required under the 1988 Solid Waste Management Act. Curbside residential recycling collection is available for both the unincorporated and County municipalities through interlocal agreements. Research of and contracting with recycling market firms is parat of the duties of this department. |

S.W.D.D. - Refuse Disposal: The County's solid waste system is an organized dependent special district known as Indian River Solid Waste Disposal District (S.W.D.D.). The purpose of the Refuse Disposal department under S.W.D.D. is to contribute to the health and safety of the community by operating solid waste collection centers throughout the County. These are used as drop-off points for residents, not using franchised collection services, and as collection points for recyclables. Waste materials are trucked to the landfill for disposal or transfer to recycling firms. Collection in incorporated areas of the County is the responsibility of the respective cities. |

Sanitary Landfill: The County's solid waste system is an organized dependent special district known as Indian River Solid Waste Disposal District (S.W.D.D.). The Sanitary Landfill's purpose under S.W.D.D. is to contribute to the health and safety of the community as a whole and to meet regulatory requirements. Operations at the landfill include: maintenance and operation of the active landfill, a materials collection center, household hazardous waste storage facilities, a tire shredder, an air-curtain incinerator and mulching and composting facilities. |
