Emergency Management: The Emergency Management department's function is to develop, coordinate and promote comprehensive emergency plans for pre- and post-disaster events in Indian River County. Its responsibilities include ascertaining the County meets all local government requirements under the State Emergency Management Act. This involves coordination efforts with services at State and Federal levels. The department also supervises and directs the operations and maintenance of County communications, warning equipment and associated systems to ensure the operational readiness for any type of emergency or disaster. |

Fire Services: Fire Services falls under the Indian River County Emergency Service Special District. Under the District Code, the purpose of the district is to provide fire, rescue, emergency medical services and other emergency services to property and persons within the district boundaries. Fire Services is responsible for all fire suppression, airport crash response, arson investigation, fire inspection and fire prevention operations. |

Advanced Life Support: The Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division falls under the Indian River County Emergency Special Services District. Under the District Code, the purpose of the district is to provide fire, rescue, emergency medical services and other emergency services to property and persons within the district boundaries. This division is responsible for medical/trauma emergency response, CPR instruction, child safety instruction, special needs population emergency transportation and sheltering and biohazardous waste education operations. |

Radiological Emergency: Radiological preparedness is responsible for accurate planning in the event of a radioactive incident at the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant and severe weather and tropical disturbance analysis. One hundred percent funding is provided from Florida Power and Light (FPL) in support of radiological emergency preparedness in the county. |

911 Coordinator: The Communications Center was established as part of a statewide effort to provide a single, primary three digit emergency number ("911") through which emergency services can be quickly and efficiently obtained thus shortening the time required for a person to request and receive emergency aid. "911" services include call taking, location verification, call transfer and data base management. The BBC is responsible for the data base management function. The other areas are handled through the Sheriff's Department and the City of Vero Beach (within that municipality). |
